  • So I was thinking to myself and it was a good question, what if Caleb did choose dauntless. What do you think of that idea?

    • If he had then tris would have been better protected and would have made friends with others maybe.

    • But can you see the connection that would be there if Caleb didn't choose the horrid Erudite and chose the awesome Dauntless. Because then both there parents would be able to visit them at the same time and feel that they are comfortable to say that they are in good hands. But I had a feeling that Caleb would choose Erudite because of him having a kind of jealousy trait I picked up from inside the book. Tris got to be awesome while he got to be a traitor and that in my books is worth disbanding from and never to see again.

But Caleb would be like he is tougher then he was at the start of divergent.

    • I think if he chose Dauntless then Tris would not die because then Caleb would not sacrfice himself - cause he sacrifice himself so he could get rid of the guilt........

How do u think he would of responded to Tobias and Tris's relationship??????

What do u think Caleb would do if he chose Dauntless and found out about Tobias and Tris's relationship? Do u think they would ever date if Caleb was in Dauntless? Tell me What u think?

    • ^I think what the above meant was that Caleb and Beatrice could still date - if they were both in Dauntless. But I don't think that they meant that Caleb and Beatrice would date each other. I think the poster was saying that if Caleb had AlSO joined Dauntless, that he would have probably tried to prevent Tobias and Beatrice from being together. I personally don't think it would have changed much. Caleb would have been kicked out of Dauntless so fast that your head would spin. I also don't think Caleb would have dated anyone had he joined Dauntless. I can't imagine a Dauntless girl being all that attracted to him.

I just can't picture Caleb as a Dauntless. He had little, if anything, in common with the Dauntless Faction. Caleb chose correctly for himself because he truly belonged with the Erudite Faction. When Beatrice visits Caleb while he was in the Erudite Faction it was obvious that he was happy as a clam. If Erudite had not chosen to revolt against the city, I think Caleb would have spent many happy years as an Erudite. If Caleb had tried to join Dauntless, he never would have made it through basic training. He would have been one of the first to be kicked out and made factionless.

    • I have to agree. Tris was like that from the beginning, but not Caleb.

    • ^ Well, if you go by the book, since Beatrice was Divergent, she should have fit well within any of the Factions. That's just a part of being Divergent - you fit in everywhere - but there's no specific place for you. So, Beatrice would have been okay no matter which Faction she joined (had the Erudites not rebelled).

On the other hand, we have Caleb. Caleb is not evil, nor is he a bad-guy. BUT, he IS Erudite - and Erudite people are just born inherently different. That's why the Erudite Faction exists in the first place. The Faction houses people who are extremely intelligent. However, this same faction also has an evil side to it. But, Caleb can't be blamed for being Erudite no more than somebody can be blamed for having black hair or blue eyes. It's pretty much a genetic thing.

Due to his genetics, Caleb wouldn't have lasted very long in Dauntless. I think Caleb has a side that can occasionally be sneaky and underhanded... so he wouldn't have lasted in Candor either. Caleb possibly could have lasted in Abnegation or Amnity - but he would have been very unhappy and unsatisfied living in either Faction.

This is judging Caleb as a true 'Erudite' - which he really was. But, I feel that I'm as bad as some of the Genetically Pure in the book, who insist that people within a Faction cannot change due to their faulty genes. We've seen people within a Faction have a change of heart - and become totally different people. So, the above paragraphs are based mostly on logic and science. The human heart is capable of many things. I hope that eventually Caleb has a change of heart and becomes somebody that Andrew, Natalie, and Beatrice all could be proud of.

    • If Caleb joined Dauntless he would of not made the train and fall off the rails.

    • I don't think that's a good idea, because personally, I think Caleb is keen on mental intelligence instead of physical intelligence. Of course, he can survive the train or jump down the net (using logistics and math calculating). But if he remains in Dantless, he would thought something like, "I have to encounter my fear and spend days fighting?" That might drive him into dropping out and become factionless. But yeah ... his sister can be there to support him ... but I reckon that's against Dauntless rule. So his choosing Erudite is a good thing, only for him.

I don´t agree, Triss is divergent but a big part of her belong in duantless. It have been proved countless times in the books that she has the mind and the will to be a dauntless member. She did made friends with others, Cristina for one and of course four/Tobias

    • If Caleb had chosen Dauntless it would have been a bad choice, as Jeanine described (actually showing wisdom in the beginning for a brief moment)- to be someone else who he's not. He's not happy or pleasant or easy going enough to be in Amity. He certainly holds himself back too much to be Candor, and never had the inner strength to be Dauntless. He was always going to be either Abegnation or Erudite.

Then again, though Tris is smart, she was never going to choose Erudite because she wanted more adventure out of life, more emotion and was not driven by being superior in knowledge... and because of politics. She was also not going for Amity or Candor for the same reasons as Caleb.

I'd guess Caleb lacked the Dauntless aspect, being "less" than Tris in some way.

Maybe it was different in the book, but that moment in Insurgent when he had just used violence but still doesn't step in for Tris is the moment he lost me. Total coward, weak-ass uselessness (HE JUST DEFENDED himself!)

In the books, it says that Caleb values his life the most, his comfort comes second, and the lives of the people he is supposed to love comes somewhere after. He would fail Dauntless training in a heartbeat. He is a coward, he is greedy, and he could be good at the sims, but not physical training.

No, that's not right. Tris got three factions, in which case she would have fit in in one of those factions, not any faction. She wouldn't have been able to be in Candor or Amity, but she would have been fine in Dauntless, Abnegation or Erudite. So it's not that being Divergent means that you fit in anywhere, unless you got all five factions, its just the factions that you got.
